Castleman Learning Network

Improving education across Dorset

Get into teaching

At the CLN we run a Primary School Direct Initial Teacher Training Programme in conjunction with The Learning Institute. Our vision is to develop and prepare the teachers of tomorrow with the skills and knowledge they need to deliver creative and challenging teaching and learning in the Primary setting.

We have been running our School Direct programme successfully for several years now. As a provider, we tend to have a smaller cohort of trainees. Working in a tight-knit group enables our trainees to really get to know each other and form a supportive network. We pride ourselves in providing individualised support preparing our trainees for the career ahead of them.

We are excited to announce that applications for our School Direct Programme are now open! We look forward to receiving your application!

We are holding several online information sessions during the Summer Term 2022:

Monday 23rd May – 10am

Thursday 26th May – 7.30pm

Please register your place at and joining instructions will be sent to you.

It isn’t always easy to choose between teacher training providers but here are a few reasons we believe that make us stand out from other providers:

We are dedicated to providing a supportive and nurturing environment and have a very strong focus on well-being.

We recognise that everyone has a different journey to becoming a teacher and we are committed to providing individualised support throughout the journey.

We have very strong relationships with our partnership schools and have now extended our partnerships across Dorset to include Blandford, Wimborne, Ferndown and Bournemouth as well as Poole.

We have a strong focus on building excellent working relationships with our trainees as well as encouraging the relationships between trainees through Professional Reflection Hubs recognising how important a support network is during your teacher training year.

We have a high employment rate and will go above and beyond to support trainees through the process of applying jobs. We provide workshops on writing job applications, and interview skills as well as providing opportunities for mock interviews.

The front loaded structure of our programme means that not only do trainees start their placements at the very start of the Autumn term, but in the summer term, trainees can really focus on being in the classroom preparing them for life as an Early Career Teacher (ECT) having completed most tasks and academic assignments by this point.

We provide a high quality programme and are always keen for feedback to make improvements. We aim to find the best people to provide training to the trainees. All training is in the local area therefore you don’t need to travel far.

We have a commitment to the trainees after qualifying and often keep in touch with them. We are also heavily involved in the new ECT programme delivery and assessment of ECTs.

We are very flexible and throughout the COVID pandemic have demonstrated this and our commitment to getting you through your training whatever challenges may arise!

If you don’t have a degree but are interested in pursuing a career in teaching, The Learning Institute facilitate a Foundation Degree out of a hub in Poole and the CLN are involved in administrating and hosting this course at Broadstone Middle School. Please visit their website for further information.

Information on the eligibility criteria for being accepted on to teacher training programmes can be found on website.

At CLN we require a degree (in any subject) at 2:2 or above and Maths, English and Science GCSE at C or above. In terms of the GCSEs required, if you do not have the above subjects in A-C grade, don’t panic! We would recommend that either you take the relevant GCSE outside of the recruitment process, or alternatively we can facilitate an equivalency test in any (or all subjects) if you are successful at interview.

Although work experience is not a requirement, we would recommend that anyone applying to School Direct has spent some time in a school. We have already supported many successful school experience placements so if you would like us to arrange one for you please get in touch: we would love to help.
